“The best way to predict your future is to create it.” – Abraham Lincoln
Personal Reflection:
When I hear this quote, it reminds me that the future isn’t something that just happens to us—it’s something we actively shape. So often, people spend their energy trying to predict what’s coming next. We look for patterns, study history, and even consult others to tell us what the future might hold. And while learning from the past and planning have value, the truth is, nobody can predict the future with certainty.
But what we can do is create it. And that’s what makes this quote so powerful. It puts the responsibility back into our hands. If we want a different future, if we want something better for ourselves, our families, our careers, or even the world, we have to be willing to step up and design it.
I think about how many times in my own life I’ve been tempted to wait. Waiting for the “right” moment. Waiting for things to settle down, waiting until I felt ready, and the more I waited, the more I realized….there is no perfect moment! The people who build amazing futures don’t wait for the stars to align; they take that first step forward, even if it’s uncertain or uncomfortable.
Dreams, after all, are easy. Anybody can dream about a better tomorrow. But dreams without action are just daydreams. The difference between wishing and creating is what you’re willing to do today. That small choice to get started, to take action, to learn, to risk failure—that’s what turns a dream into a future.
Think about the innovators and leaders we admire. The computer was once just an idea. Airplanes were once laughed at as impossible. And yet, people who believed in their vision enough to act on it changed the world for all of us. If they had waited until it felt safe or certain, none of those things would exist today.
The same applies in our personal lives. Your past doesn’t define your future. Just because you’ve failed before or things didn’t work out the way you hoped, doesn’t mean you’re stuck. Failure is actually part of the process of creating. Every setback teaches us something valuable. It shapes the way we move forward. The only thing that truly defines your future is the action you choose to take today.
This quote also reminds me to stay focused on what I care about most. Life is too short to fill our time with things that don’t matter or that drain us. If we’re not intentional, we can end up living someone else’s version of success instead of creating our own. But, when we live in alignment with our passion and values, the future we create feels authentic and that’s where true fulfillment comes from.
So for me, “The best way to predict your future is to create it” is really an invitation. It’s a call to stop waiting, stop guessing, and start building. To trust that while the future is uncertain, you have more power than you think. And to realize that each small step you take today is shaping the story you’ll tell tomorrow.
3 Reflection Questions for You:
- What dream or vision have you been holding onto that you haven’t yet taken action on?
- What’s one small, specific step you could take this week to move that dream closer to reality?
- How would your future look different if you stopped waiting for the “right time” and simply started now?
